Editorial Illustration / BBC / The country that brought a sea back to life
The article highlights the recent efforts made by the governments of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan towards the Aral Sea. While Kazakh people have made significant changes to revive some areas, resulting in the re-employment of fishermen, Uzbekistan continues to use the water for agriculture, particularly for growing cotton. I have decided to illustrate this problem by showing how the two countries are dealing with this issue and the outcomes they are achieving. I chose a limited color palette to draw more attention to the details and style.
Thumbnails
When creating thumbnails, you don't always need to generate multiple ideas across 2-3 pages. Once you have a solid concept, you can proceed to the next step. Therefore, I sometimes leave blank spaces on pages.
Color Comps
Tight Sketch
I used Metaphorical Imagery to symbolize what each country is getting from the Aral Sea. I Used Visual Puns: Country names to show who is who in the image with the traditional elements in the clothes. I put two nations in one ship to show that the Aral Sea’s problem is equal to both.
